This is probably one of the most famous commercials ever aired. It’s a beautiful sentiment that played well to the feelings of the public at the time. That doesn’t at all date it though. It’s a timeless commercial that people of every generation should enjoy. So have a Coke and smile!

Too bad they don’t say it all anymore. This was great commercial. I can remember seeing when I was a kid and singing along. This really tried to appeal to everyone too. I think it worked.

I don’t remember that alien on the show! – Mego Star Trek Figures

I actually had the whole first set of these myself, including the Enterprise playset. Instead of keeping them as souvenirs, I did what you were supposed to do with toys. I played with them until they fell apart. I think I was much happier child because of it.

Dracula says “I love Betamax” – Crazy Eddie

I know I’m a little late for Halloween, but this one is too much of a classic to pass up.

Very timely too since it’s a Betamax commercial. You see, at one time there was a format war between Betamax and VHS. While VHS won the war, the people were hurt the most were not the Betamax people, but the consumers. Well, we’re heading to the same kind of format war right now for the replacement of the DVD format. We the consumers better get ready to get caught in the crossfire.

This of course reminds me of the scene from “Family Guy” where Peter says he has a message in his Alpha Bits that says “OOOOO”. Brian then reminds him he’s eating Cheerios…..Classic.

The Midnight Ride of Cheap Gas – Volkswagen

At today’s prices, that’s like seventy something miles per gallon. On the other hand, assuming this commercial was made before 1979 ( I bet it was – If someone can date please leave a comment), it ain’t that great. I found this site, that only goes back to 1979. It’s the earliest I could find, probably because I am just to lazy to look more. According to it, the price of gas then was around 75 cents a gallon. At three cents a mile, that comes out to 25 miles per gallon. My Ford Focus gets close to 35, so that don’t sound so great. I know prices were higher right before 1979 due to the big oil embargo, but I bet this commercial predates the embargo. So what’s up with this????

This commercial worked it’s magic so well on me that I made my mom buy me almost the complete set for my birthday. We lived near a department store (similar to K-Mart or Target) called “Treasury”. It was so cool. They had a whole isle of Star Wars toys. I was eight. I was in kid heaven. They didn’t have the Jawa figure. I guess they were sold out, which is funny. I wouldn’t think the Jawa figure would be a “hot” item, but they were sold out.

This certainly is the one that started it all, started my fascination with TV commercials that is. I couldn’t have been more than six or seven, but I remember the adult women around me making fun of the poor man who ran the laundry.

Some of you might have more fond memories of the “Calgon Take Me Away” commercials, but this is the one that’s pretty solid with me.
I use this one to start off the new blog dedicated to what TV has to offer in the way of commercials. Some of these I love, other I hate. But I hope we can all sit back and enjoy them together.
