Yes, there was a time before Blackberries and Treos. This was a time when mankind was forced to deal with one-way text messaging. This commercial is from that time. We called them beepers on the street, and pagers in the office. Some of them could only do (gasp) numbers!

The Lone Ranger Runs Silver – Amoco

For some reason the old fifties TV show The Lone Ranger was real big in syndication in the eighties, probably due to the movie that came out in ‘81. Amoco decided to take advantage of this got Clayton Moore to appear in their “Sliver” commercial. Of course The Lone Ranger’s horse was named “Silver”, so that’s the tie in.

Considering he was at least close to being in his seventies when he made this, he still looks pretty spry. Plus, you can’t beat a man’s man that drives a Jeep. He certainly deserves a seat on the square table, that’s for sure.

To be honest, I think the really cute/funny part is when the mouse climbs over the wall to get to the Game Boy Micro. It’s the subtle little things in some of these commercials that make them so good to me. I hope eveyone enjoys this one and is not too scandalized.

Very timely too since it’s a Betamax commercial. You see, at one time there was a format war between Betamax and VHS. While VHS won the war, the people were hurt the most were not the Betamax people, but the consumers. Well, we’re heading to the same kind of format war right now for the replacement of the DVD format. We the consumers better get ready to get caught in the crossfire.

This of course reminds me of the scene from “Family Guy” where Peter says he has a message in his Alpha Bits that says “OOOOO”. Brian then reminds him he’s eating Cheerios…..Classic.

This has got to be one of the greatest commercials of all time. It’s theme is based on the year it ran during the super bowl, or at least on a book named after that year. That year was 1984.

To be honest, I think the graphics for this were WAY ahead of their
time. I always thought this commercial was awesome. They recently redid this commercial to include things like the runner carrying and iPod. While I highly recommend the iPod, I don’t like the new commercial as much as I like the original.
